Pastor's Devotion for a week beginning December 21, 2016

I Samuel 2:2 “There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.”

In this season, I am not sure we can say much more than this.

No one is like our God.

No one is stronger than our God.

We can proclaim this on the shortest day of the year…the longest night.

We, however, may not always believe it.

Sometimes it seems a little “out there.”

What, with the pain and suffering in the world, we wonder about the holiness and strength of God.

The person saying this in 1 Samuel is Hannah, a woman who could not give birth.

But finally, she did, and she gave birth to Samuel, a great prophet.

Mary, the mother of Jesus was a young girl that, unlike Hannah, did not expect to give birth.

But she did, and she gave birth to Jesus, another great prophet.

And it is he, who helps us through the pain and suffering in this world.

It is because of him that we say no one is like our God, or stronger than our God.

Oh, our world is strong.

But God is stronger.

Not sin, death or evil will ever have the last word.

We may think so sometimes.

But it will never happen.

So therefore, we have Christmas.

We have “God with us.”

It brings us hope, love, peace and life.

It will never let us go.

The real question of Christmas is who’s holding who?

Do we hold the baby Jesus?

Or does he hold us? I think we all know the answer to that.

Lord, your holiness and strength will hold us forever.  Thank you.  Amen

Devotions will return on January 4, 2017…Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
